In 2008 I started building this house out of two forty-foot by eight foot shipping containers. We were finding our house too small to host guests, so I decided to try building one of the popular shipping container homes on a shoe string. I learned a lot and had fun in the process. At first it was pretty basic. I kept improving it, letting in more light with large windows in the living area and French doors that open onto a nice covered deck. The interior is sheathed in pine that I cut myself. A gas fireplace gives it a cozy glow in winter and a heat pump provides plenty of additional heat and air conditioning as needed.
Most guests come to disconnect. We stocked this cabin with lots of games, jigsaw puzzles and books. For the electronically addicted, we recently added a TV with Netflix access over fiber optic WiFi.
The single bedroom features a double bed plus a single on a loft above. Additional sleeping space comes from a queen sized sleeper sofa in the living area... That makes five. We also have folding mattresses in case a larger group wants to enjoy a lot of togetherness.
The guesthouse features a full sized kitchen equipped with full sized appliances and other useful cooking and dining ware.
Although the guesthouse is located just across the breezeway from our main house, the French doors, deck and parking are oriented in the opposite direction, overlooking a small pond to optimize privacy.
Disembark the stairs from the deck onto a trail that follows a lovely creek through the woods and to spectacular Miller Falls. You’re gonna love it!
